One of the great things about Netflix’s ridiculous and huge content library is that it – without having to worry about times or the like like HBO – can sit on a seemingly endless supply of fan-favorite TV shows without having to (or ever try to, really) force them in front of the public. One such show is long-running Viking series The last kingdom, which Netflix just announced, gets a bonus tie-in movie in addition to the previously announced fifth and final season.

This news came out during the London MCM Comic-Con (via Deadline), where producer Nigel Marchant explained that last season “completely ends the series”, but that “there was always one more story we wanted to tell” beyond that. That “one more story” is the movie that is called Seven Kings Must Die and will feature “many of the series’ cast” in addition to “some new faces.”

The one familiar face we know we will see is series star / executive producer Alexander Dreymon, who will be reproducing his role as Uhtred. He said along the way that he is “so grateful” to the fans of the show, and the fact that they get a chance to throw this bonus movie on top of the actual series finale is entirely due to their support.

The last kingdom and Seven Kings Must Die is based on Bernard Cornwells Saxon stories. They are not, despite evidence to the contrary, related to the History show Vikings or the show’s later sequel series Vikings: Valhalla, despite the fact that they cover similar historical grounds and that the latter is also a Netflix show. That’s the other thing: HBO would never have Game of Thrones and then another dragon-based fantasy show, but Netflix may have two Viking shows and no one has a problem with that.
