Marvel Comics Easter Eggs In Netflix’s Jessica Jones
A part of any Marvel series or movie is discovering all the little details and Easter eggs the creators put in. Ideally, Marvel shows should be understandable even for those who have not read comic books. When Jessica Jones premiered on Netflix in 2015 and went on to run for three seasons, it introduced the lesser-known superhero to those not familiar with her comic book adventures and fascinating history.
While viewers unfamiliar with the comics got the gist of whom this Private Investigator is thanks to the series, there are plenty of Easter eggs in Jessica Jones that only die-hard Marvel fans could have noticed.
6 The Hidden Jewel
Jessica’s adoptive sister and closest friend, Trish, is one of the first people to learn that Jessica has special powers. Instead of freaking out about it, Trish decides to help and designs a costume for Jessica, as one of the flashback scenes in the series shows. Trish takes it one step further and comes up with the superhero name “Jewel” – something Jessica’s not excited about.
All comic book fans will know that Jewel is not a random name. Back when Jessica was still a young and somewhat naive superhero, she did use the name Jewel. She only switched to her civil name later on and never looked back.
5 The Future Baby
In the Netflix series, Jessica briefly forms a romantic relationship with her fellow superhero Luke Cage. Unfortunately, the romance falls apart when Luke finds out that Jessica is the person responsible for the death of his wife because of Kilgrave’s mind manipulation. They never rekindle their romance and Luke goes on to date other people while Jessica, for the most part, remains single.
Before all of this happens, there’s a fun little moment when Jessica goes to Luke’s bar to find him, and the bartender that works there makes a joke that Jessica is going to have his baby. They never get that far in their relationship in the show, but they do in fact get married and have a daughter together in the comics. Despite what the show would like the audience to believe, the comic book versions of Jessica and Luke have managed to form one of the most stable romantic partnerships in Marvel!
4 Luke Cage Likes Christmas
Another interesting Easter egg in Jessica Jones ice her connection to Luke Cage. Just like many other comic book superheroes, Luke also has a catchphrase he likes to use. His catchphrase is: “Sweet Christmas!” While he does not use it as often in the show as he does in the comics, the audience gets to hear it twice.
The first time is when Luke and Jessica get intimate and the second time is when they find Antoine’s weed warehouse. In other words, the catchphrase works whether the situation is pleasant for Luke or just plain surprising.
3 The Name Dropping
A common Easter egg in superhero shows and movies is dropping the names of comic book creators. And when Jessica Jones is concerned, one creator stands out. Brian Michael Bendis wrote the series Alias that in many ways inspired the show and Jessica’s portrayal as well as her complex relationship with Kilgrave.
As such, it comes as no surprise that the show makes a Bendis Easter egg at one point. When Kilgrave is meeting Malcolm and standing near a newsstand, Bendis is on the cover of View magazine and has the headline “Idea Man.” That’s fitting since the show uses many of Bendis’ ideas!
2 Stan Lee Makes An Appearance
Until his death in 2018, no fan could imagine seeing a Marvel movie without a Stan Lee cameo in it. Jessica Jones is no exception to this rule, even though those who would expect a traditional cameo would be disappointed.
Instead, Stan Lee appears in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment. Just like in Daredevilhis photo can be seen hanging in the background of one scene, proving yet again that Jessica Jones is set in the same universe as the MCU movies.
1 The Truth About Detective Clemons
It does not come as a surprise that Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, or even David Tennant’s villain Kilgrave are characters taken from comic books. However, not every fan might realize that the same goes for some of the supporting characters who do not have a big part in the show. One of them is Detective Oscar Clemons. He appears in the show for the first time when he questions Jessica about the death of Hope’s parents. He’s not a bad person, though, and Jessica realizes this, so she asks for his help when she needs a cop to see what Kilgrave can do.
There aren’t that many good cops in the MCU, ones with strong personal integrity. Clemons is a good cop, though, both in the show and in the comics where he’s the only NYPD police officer who’s determined to arrest Frank Castle for everything he’s done as the Punisher, all the people he hurt and killed. It could be argued that the Punisher has a reason for what he’s doing, but that does not change the fact that he’s still breaking the law and killing people, which is something Clemons just can not let slide in the comics.
