While some competing studios, including Warner Bros., Disney and Paramount, have embraced the hybrid streaming and cinema release strategy in 2021, Sony has mostly maintained exclusive cinema releases for their major titles, including Afterlife.
The film will not hit theaters until November 19, and based on Sony’s latest release models, it will probably be a while before it hits streaming.
Sony is also an outlier among most of the major studios these days because they do not have an in-house streaming service, which means they have been able to sign some major streaming distribution agreements for their movies.
Right now, Sony is in the final stages of a 2017-2021 first-pay window deal with Starz (Netflix will take over that window in 2022), meaning that when Ghostbusters: Afterlife hits streaming, it’s likely to be on Starz first.
Is Ghostbusters: Afterlife a sequel to the original movies?
Indeed! Set 30 years after the events of Ghostbusters II, Afterlife Callie Spengler (Carrie Coon), daughter of the late Harold Ramis’ beloved character Egon Spengler, and her children Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) as they discover their family surprising heritage – and learn to embrace it when their small town is overrun with annoying paranormal activity.
The film itself is also a family affair. Produced by original director Ivan Reitman and directed by Juno and The Frontrunner filmmaker Jason Reitman (his son), Afterlife also promises the return of several franchise pillars, including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts – and some reinvented versions of fan-favorite ghosts too.
What will ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ be about?
From that point of view, this reimagining will not be a repeat of the same plot with different characters, and it will not continue with any of the threads established by the 2016 reboot.
Instead, the story takes on the present, where a single mother (Carrie Coon) and her two children (Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace) are thrown out of their homes. With no other options, the family moves into the dilapidated farmhouse in Oklahoma, which was left to them by the children’s deceased grandfather.
When the family gets there, they find out that the small town has been the sight of frequent, unexplained earthquakes. These earthquakes, which are not understood in scientific terms by anyone who studies them, arouse the children’s interest, and as they work to understand the conditions in their new home, they reveal their own lineage.
It turns out that their grandfather kept more than just an old building for them. The children are descendants of Dr. Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) from the original Ghostbusters team, a group whose legacy has since fallen into obscurity. It’s up to the new generation to uncover the mysteries of the past and use the old equipment to cope with the supernatural crisis plaguing their small town in Oklahoma.
