The Power of the Dog Trailer # 2 stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a brutal cowboy

Netflix has just released the new trailer for the upcoming western thriller The power of the dog with Doctor Strange star Benedict Cumberbatch. They really teased us this summer with the teaser trailer for the movie, but after watching only two minutes and switching, I think we will all be happy with our Netflix subscriptions. Confused!
Netflix official synopsis for The power of the dog reads: “Heavy, pale, handsome, Phil Burbank is brutally seductive. Al Phil’s romance, power and fragility are caught in the past and in the country: He can castrate a bull calf with two quick strokes of his knife; he swims naked in the river and lubricates his body with mud.He is a cowboy as raw as his skins. The year is 1925. The Burbank brothers are wealthy ranchers in Montana. At the Red Mill restaurant on the way to the market, the brothers Rose, the widower, and her impressionable son Peter meet.
Phil, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, behaves so cruelly that he drives them both to tears, rejoices over their wounded and makes his other cowhands laugh – all except his brother George, who comforts Rose and then returns to marry with her. As Phil swings between rage and cunning, his mockery of Rose takes an eerie form – he hovers on the edge of her sight and whistles a tune she can no longer play. His mockery of her son is more obvious, amplified by the cheers of Phil’s cowhand disciples. Then it looks like Phil is taking the boy under his wings. Is this latest gesture a softening that leaves Phil exposed, or a plot that twists on to threat? “
The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee and is written and directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Jane Campion. Benedict Cumberbatch has proven to be a chameleon weaving in and out of roles throughout his career, but I can not say that we have ever seen him take on a role with such malice, not to mention the flawless accent . Real-life couples Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons met on the set of the Hulu series Fargo in the second season of the series. They play a married couple whose dreams of a better life do not match. If you’ve slept on Noah Hawley’s masterful writing provided by acting powerhouses, you’re doing yourself a cinematic injury. Stop whatever you are doing, WHAT you are doing, and get to your Hulu.
Jane Campion took the world and the academy by storm with the 1993 classic The piano. It earned her an Oscar for Best Writing as well as Best Actress for Holly Hunter and Best Supporting Actor for Anna Paquin. Campion’s instruction of The top of the lake with Elisabeth Moss in the lead role, would see her walk away with an Emmy for instruction. Since you have already stopped whatever you did to see Fargo on Hulu you can take a snack break and jump in The top of the lake after, The night is young!
The power of the dog has been hailed as fascinating, astonishing and a masterpiece. Watch it in select theaters in November and on Netflix on December 1st.
