Starbucks unveils 2021 holiday cup design more than 50 days before Christmas

It would officially not be the holiday season without Starbucks’ festive cups. And this year, they are better than ever.

From Thursday, customers will have their hot drinks served in one of four new festive cups “wrapped as gifts for the holiday,” according to a press release. This year’s design is inspired by traditional holiday motifs, including wrapping paper, ribbons on a gift box, holiday candles and a candy cane.

“This holiday, we wanted it to feel magical, we wanted it to be warm, and we wanted it to be inclusive,” said Suzie Reecer, Starbucks’ associate creative director. “Our goal was really to bring joy to every customer and every partner.”

New this year is an iced sugar cookie almond milk latte – Starbucks’ first holiday drink ever made with milk without dairy. The drink mixes syrup with sugar flavor, espresso and almond milk together and shakes and is served over ice cream. The drink is a response to the growing popularity of cold drinks, which accounted for 75% of its total beverage sales in the last quarter.

Traditional drinks are also back on the menu, including peppermint mocha, caramel brulee latte and toasted white chocolate mocha. Starbucks also adds a reindeer cake and brings back other sweet treats, such as a snowman cookie and sugar plum.

The annual celebration has become a tradition for the coffee chain and drums enthusiasm among its loyal customers.

Starbucks first launched seasonal cups in 1997. The company caused controversy in 2015 when it removed “seasonal symbols”, ie. reindeer and ornaments, and went with a simple two-tone red cup. Since then, it has added several festive blooms, such as decorations and mistletoe, to its cups.

This year, the chain expects to achieve record sales and expects more than $ 3 billion to be added to Starbucks’ gift cards. “We are ready for this holiday,” CEO Kevin Johnson said in an earnings call last week.
