LA, Ventura counties under red flag warning as strong winds, low humidity increase fire hazard

A red flag warning went into effect across large parts of the Los Angeles area Sunday morning as gusts of wind and low humidity across Southland increased the risk of fire.

The warning, which covers most of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, went into effect at 6 p.m. 9 and will be in place by 6 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

High wind activity is expected on Sunday morning and afternoon.

“Gusty Santa Ana winds are expected to continue until Monday morning, but wind speeds are expected to be 10 to 15 mph less than Sunday,” according to the NWS. “Humidity is expected to drop to about 15 to 20 percent in the middle of the morning on Sunday, potentially falling to between 8 and 15 percent on Sunday afternoon and evening and again Monday.”

Authorities anticipate critical fire conditions, as the combination of strong winds, low humidity and dry fuels can contribute to rapid fire spread.

“You want to be sure that if you have a crash or if your car starts to smoke on the side of the road, do not pull it over into that brush on the edge,” said Captain Sara Rathburn of LA County. Fire Department. “We get a lot of vehicle fires continuing in wildfires. And on a day like today, they are harder to catch. ”
