Janet Hubert gives update on the relationship with Will Smith after reconciliation
“Had we had the opportunity to speak at the time, I think this would never have happened,” Hubert said of the decades-long feud between the couple.
Janet Hubert gave an update on her relationship with Will Smith a year after they put their 27-year-old feud aside.
The actress said the two have become closer since burying the ax during HBO Max’s “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” reunion, and told People on Thursday that they even “text each other back and forth all the time.”

“In fact, we have a very good relationship,” she explained. “I meant it with all my heart when I hugged him, because I saw the little boy, the little 21-year-old boy. Had we had the opportunity to talk together then, I think this would never have happened.”
The ugly outcome came after Hubert was replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid after the third season of the stunning 90s sitcom. Smith would go on to describe Hubert as hard to work with, while publicly beating the actor in over the years. At the reunion, the two hashed it out, saying they finally understood each other’s side of the story.
“He was a place and I was a place, we were both a bad place,” Hubert said. “When you’re both in a bad place and there’s no communication, you have to talk. So it’s been wonderful, it’s been nice to have him back in my sphere.”
Now, after feeling rejected by Hollywood for years from the “Fresh Prince” fallout, Hubert is as busy as ever with TV projects – though she questioned whether she should call it a comeback.
“I have not come anywhere from. I have been here. It’s just now – I always had to prove myself. I also had to come in with a premise, and I no longer have to, which is really nice. “
