1,000 pound horse hoisted to safety by helicopter

A 1,000-pound horse named Sunny was rescued from a helicopter ravine near Lake Skinner on Friday, November 26th.
Sunny’s flight took about 10 minutes, thanks to Riverside County Animal Services and other public safety personnel walking together on the hoist.
The 4-year-old gelding ended up in a ravine between two boulders after his rider fell off the horse on Wednesday. The gorge was just off Indian Oak Drive, west of De Portola Road, in unincorporated Temecula.
The horse could not be lifted out until Friday due to strong winds, said Lieutenant Lesley Huennekens from Animal Services.
So Sunny’s owner camped with him overnight and offered company and comfort, authorities said.
Before his airlift out of the gorge, Sunny was anesthetized to allow rescuers to securely fasten the specialized harness – called an Anderson Sling. A resident of the area let the sheriff’s helicopter pilot land Sunny in their field.
“These airlift rescues require optimal conditions,” Huennekens said in a statement. “We’re so grateful to the HART crew from the Riverside City Fire Department and our county and fire department sheriff’s partners for making this operation a great success.
“Saving Sunny from this predicament will be a highlight of the year for all of us,” she added.
