Trailer for sweets and spices from India

“What if we are who we are, and then everything changes … and we no longer recognize ourselves.” Bleecker Street Films has debuted an official trailer for an entertaining romantic comedy titled India sweets and spices, the second feature from filmmaker Geeta Malik. After returning from college to her family’s upscale suburban home in New Jersey, Alia Kapur changes their orderly lives with her brave independence. She also falls for the son of the owners of a new local Indian grocery store. Alias’ surprising arrival at home turns into rebellion as she reveals secrets about both of her parents that push her towards a daring and ultimately hilarious confrontation. Sophia Ali (see also in Uncharted trailer) has the lead role as Alia, with a cast including Manisha Koirala, Adil Hussain, Rishi Shah, Deepti Gupta, By Sapru, and also Anita Kalathara. They are trying to market this as Crazy rich Asians but instead of an Indian family. Though it seems quite entertaining in its own unique, witty ways. I want to see it! Looks pretty good.

Alia Kapur (Sophia Ali) returns to her family’s upscale New Jersey suburban home after spending a year in college, changing their orderly lives with her newly gained independence. She befriends Varun (Rish Shah), the beautiful son of the new owners of the local Indian grocery store, and invites his family to a weekly dinner with her parents’ wealthy friends. She is shocked to hear that her perfectionist mother Sheila (Manisha Koirala) has a previous connection to Varun’s mother Bhairavi (Deepti Gupta). Alia’s surprise turns into indignation as she reveals intriguing secrets about both of her parents that push her toward a daring and transformative confrontation. India sweets and spices is written and directed by the upcoming Indian filmmaker Geeta Malik, her second feature after making Troublemaker previously, as well as a few other short films. Produced by Naomi Despres, John Penotti, Gigi Pritzker. This one premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year and is also playing at the San Diego Asian Film Festival. Bleecker Street will debut India sweets and spices in select American cinemas starts November 19, 2021.
