Smite adds Transformers Optimus Prime Skin to Battle Battle in November
Smite continues to bring the crossovers with a trio of skins that transform mythical gods into transforming robots from the beloved 1980s cartoon.
The world off Beat was already more than meets the eye thanks to numerous pop-cultural crossovers, so it almost makes sense that Optimus Prime would lead the charge of a full-fledged campaign full of skins from the beloved G1 Transformers cartoon. Originally released in 2014, Beat contains a huge cast representing several pantheons of gods and mythical figures from around the world. Seeing the crossover of the Greek god Zeus, who took on the Thor of Nordic mythology, was already a big part of the game’s appeal, and developer Titan Forge has expanded it to pop culture buddies in recent years to keep the game fresh.
Some of the signs added to this clash of the gods make more sense than others. The cast of Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender appeared in Beat recently along with sequels Legend of Korra. These characters have powers in line with many mythological figures, so their inclusion as skins in June last year makes some sense. While there are certain characters in the game who use melee weapons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are more questionable inclusions, though any 80s kid is likely to ignore the logical inconsistencies of rocking their favorite party turtle when defending the old ones.
It looks like the heroes in a half-shell were a hit, like Saturday morning cartoon clips Transformers joins Beat in the game’s next match pass in November. Titan Forge’s latest trailer reveals that Autobot leader Optimus Prime will fight Decepticon’s Starscream and Megatron as skins for Geb, Jing Wei and Ra, respectively. Each character has two skins on the passport, where one has the character integrated into Beat‘s graphic style and one that takes things all the way back to the G1 days using shady video game graphics.

The G1 versions of the characters are exclusive to the Prestige Track, which extends the Battle Pass on 60 levels all the way to level 120. Players only have to buy the Pass once, but when you get to the very end of this super-large track, it will mean that play a lot Smite in the few months when the content is available. If previous crossover events are any indication, the pass also unlocks various cosmetic items along the way, some of which bind to Transformers. Details of these items are not yet known, but anyone who wants to represent Cybertron and all of its residents is likely to get that chance if they buy next month.
With the MOBA genre as a whole settling into the same niche as MMORPGs and auto battlers, Hi-Rez injects well-known characters into Beat is an ingenious move. Everyone knows how well these types of events work for games like Fortnite, and the same energy can keep a game in the spotlight, even if it only serves a small but dedicated player base in its old age. Given how many games only get dark online after just a few years on the market, and how some of Hi-Rez’s previous titles have faded into obscurity, it’s nice to see the publisher make progress in keeping its portfolio going over the years.
