It’s Hannah John-Kamen Versus Goblins in this horror movie
Maya (Hannah John-Kamen) and Jamie (Douglas Booth) accept their ticket to rural bliss in the form of an adorable country house. It’s a bit of a fixer top, with holes and leaks here and there, but it’s not something a few renovations can fix. Most importantly, the creaking floorboards are nothing compared to the hassle lurking nearby. The trailer shows the couple being warned to leave a “blood sacrifice” in their garden every night, just as the previous owner did – and oddly enough, this scary tip does not set off their alarm bells.
They continue the ritual, but a few conversations with the locals show that it is more than an old superstition; their neighbors take it very seriously. Maya and Jamie discover it for themselves as they miss an evening and eventually encounter the bloodthirsty goblins known as “Redcaps”. (Think Gremlins, but bigger, uglier, and out for blood.) As it turns out, the malicious, murderous goblins are not their only problem: the locals – including the team of builders renovating their homes – are not so happy about their presence in the city. Between the angry neighbors and literal monsters, the tranquility of the countryside is nowhere in sight for Maya and Jamie.
“Unwelcome” comes from Irish-born director Jon Wright, the filmmaker behind the monster film “Grabbers” from 2012. The script was written with his recurring collaborator, Mark Stay, who was also his co-author of the Ben Kingsley film “Robot Overlords”. The familiar face you spotted in the trailer was truly Kristian Nairn, the “Game of Thrones” alum who spent years playing Hodor.
“Unwelcome” hits theaters March 17, 2022. You can check out the official poster and read the synopsis below.
A couple (Hannah John-Kamen, Douglas Booth) escape their urban nightmare to the tranquility of rural Ireland only to hear stories of mysterious creatures living in the gnarled old forest at the foot of their new garden. As warned by their new neighbors, in the Irish tradition, Redcaps will come when called upon to help souls in dire need of rescue, but it is crucial to remember that there is always an expensive price to pay for their help.
