Iman Vellani’s Four-Year-Old Ms. Marvel Halloween Costume Photo Surfaces Online
Photos surface online of Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel Halloween costume four years before she landed the titular role in the upcoming Disney + series.
Ms. Marvel star Iman Vellani’s pre-Marvel Cinematic Universe Halloween costume based on her upcoming role has emerged online.
Reddit user RollinsThunderr shared comparison photos of Vellani in two different Ms. Marvel costumes. One photo showcases Vellani in the costume shown in promotional material for the upcoming Disney + series, while the other photo features the actor in her Ms. Marvel Halloween costume from 2017. The Halloween photo was taken when Vellani was 15 years old, three years before she was cast as Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel in the MCU. Vellani will be making her MCU debut as the titular hero in the upcoming Ms. Marvel series on Disney +.
Created by Sana Amanat, G. Willow Wilson, Adrian Alphona and Jamie McKelvie, Kamala Khan first appeared in an unnamed cameo in 2013’s Captain Marvel # 14. The character was properly introduced to Marvel Comics in 2014 as Ms. Marvel in Wilson and Alphona’s “Garden State of Mind” from the pages of the oversized All-New Marvel NOW! Point One. Kamala would go on to become Marvel’s first Muslim superhero to headline her own solo series, Ms. Marvelwhich debuted in February 2014.
It’s no secret that Vellani is a lifelong Marvel fan, a fact that helped her land her Ms. Marvel role in the first place. Amanat previously stated that she knew Vellani would be the perfect Kamala Khan when she saw how big of a Marvel fangirl she was during her Zoom audition. “She showed me every corner of her room, and it was covered with Avengers,” Amanat said. “Then she said, ‘Oh wait, I’m not done,’ opened up her closet, and there was more Marvel everywhere.”
Vellani has come a long way since Halloween in 2017. In a previous interview, Vellani explained how Ms. Marvel costume designer Arjun Bhasin constructed the suit for her comfort, particularly because it is the first dress in the MCU. “There’s a lot of new problems that arise with it being the first dress in the MCU, and so we wanted to make sure I can run properly, and I can squat without the dress rising up,” Vellani said. “But our costume designer was very cognizant of making me as comfortable as possible, considering I could not go to the bathroom, and just allowing me to move. The pant part is very comfortable. The top part, not so much. But it looks cool, so I can forgive it. “
Critical reception to the first two episodes of the upcoming series has been overwhelmingly positive, with many comparing the series to Spider-Man: Homecoming in its tone and predominately teen focus. Series co-director Adil El Arbi has previously shared his hopes that the MCU’s Kamala Khan will be able to compete with the Spider-Man’s success in terms of storytelling.
Ms. Marvel premieres on Disney + on June 8.
