Marvel Fans Notice Disney + Censored Iron Man 3’s Mandarin One-Shot

Marvel Cinematic Universe fans notice that All Hail the King, an Iron Man 3 one-shot focusing on Trevor Slattery, no longer contains a racial slur.

Marvel Cinematic Universe fans noticed that a racial slur has been edited out of the Disney + version of Iron Man 3 one-shot All Hail the King.

As reported by The Direct, the line in question occurs at roughly the two-minute, 17-second mark of the short after Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) spills his food on a fellow prisoner. As a fight brews, Slattery’s ally Herman appears, uttering the phrase, “Hey, c-! What’s up?” In the censored version of the scene, Herman can be heard saying, “Hey! What’s up?” At the time of writing, Disney has yet to address the edit.

This is not the first instance of Disney + editing an MCU production after its release. In early 2022, fans were confused when an altered version of The Falcon and the Winter Solider appeared on the platform that featured significantly less on-screen violence. One of the changes occurs in Episode 3, “The Power Broker,” where Dr. Wilfred Nagel’s corpse was no longer splattered with blood. Later on, in the same episode, a shot depicting a thug being pinned to a shipping container after Bucky Barnes throws a pipe through her shoulder was altered so that the weapon glances off her chest.

After fans expressed their frustrations towards the change, Disney + reverted the series back to its original state. Industry insider and journalist Ryan Parker stated that a reliable source indicated that the edit “was a software control issue and the wrong file was recently published accidentally.” Neither Marvel Studios nor Disney ever addressed the changed footage.

More recently, Disney + drew fire for editing out the tribute to Reg E. Cathey in the credits of the final episode of Luke Cage Season 2. The actor, who portrayed James Lucas, father to the titular hero, appeared in several episodes of the series and tragically passed away before the final season premiered on Netflix. Showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker publically called out the streaming service for the alteration. “I mean, why do this? Reg E Cathey was part of the heart and soul of Season Two,” Coker wrote. “We did not feel obligated to dedicate the season to him just because he died – we felt obligated because we loved him and he was a galvanizing force.”

The edited version of All Hail the King is now streaming on Disney +.
