Gorr the God Butcher’s Black Sword Could Remake the MCU
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has shown unique interpretations of characters from the comics that are both faithful to the source and distinct from it. A great example is the Asgardians. In the MCU, they are more akin to aliens than literal Gods.
These practices may continue with the latest addition to the universe, Gorr the God-Butcher, and his sword, All-Black in Thor: Love and Thunder. But if the character’s weapon was exactly like it is in comics, could All-Black change the MCU forever?
In the comics, All-Black the Necrosword was the first Symbiote created by its God, Knull. Like Gorr, Knull focused on slaying all of the Gods. However, Knull wanted to do so to engulf the galaxy in darkness. The sword itself, metaphysically tethered to the head of a decapitated Celestial, imprisoned all those killed within the Celestial, in the Realm Between, forever. While with Knull, its power was unrivaled and only grew in strength over the centuries.
When facing a group of Gods, Knull was knocked back and broke his bond with the King in Black. Instead, it moved to Gorr and gave him similar abilities as Knull, turning him into an immortal God. During that time, Gorr terrorized many Gods and earned his title, The God-Butcher. He spent centuries killing Gods until Thor finally defeated him.
But where Gorr failed, All-Black remained. It would later bond with the likes of Knull, Loki, Thor, Galactus, and Ego the Living Planet. Among the many weapons in the Marvel Universe, All-Black quickly rose the ranks. It’s an impressive showing, given how briefly the weapon has existed.
Regarding the MCU, there’s no confirmation that the sword Gorr will carry is truly All-Black or simply a sword he’s used to slay countless deities. But if it is, it could vastly open the cosmic universe of the MCU as it would imply just how old it is and what monsters lurk within its dark history. Of course, the most prominent name would be Knull, who was both the King in Black and the creator and ruler over the Symbiote race for millennia. Should the sword tease its existence, it could also mean an event just as dangerous as the one against Thanos.
On a smaller scale, All-Black would also represent one of the first instances of a Symbiote in the MCU. While Eddie Brock left behind a piece of it in Spider-Man: No Way Homethe fact that it’s from the multiverse would imply its properties could be different from All-Black’s and be more like a visiting Symbiote.
Should All-Black have its Symbiote roots, the MCU and its cosmic theater would have to look forward to anything from the possibility of invasion, villains like Carnage and Venom, and, of course, the rise of Knull. But where characters like Venom, in his reality, have had experience with these threats, the MCU has not, and that could leave them open to corruption and danger, unlikely anything they’ve seen. But for now, fans will have to wait and see just how devasting Gorr’s sword has the potential to be.
