Doctor Strange 2 Mirrored Invincible’s Guardians of the Globe Massacre

Director Sam Raimi may have pulled the ultimate bait and switch with fans by teasing the introduction of the Illuminati in trailers for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While reviews for the 28th installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been lukewarm, there is one moment getting a consistent amount of praise. In one of the best scenes of the movie, Scarlet Witch dispatches the Illuminati of Earth-838 with ease. And although it was certainly shocking, it was also very reminiscent of a scene seen just last year.

When Wanda Maximoff, now the Scarlet Witch, started off her murder spree in Multiverse of Madness by killing Blackbolt, some were reminded of Omni-Man’s massacre in the Invincible series premiere. The rest of the scene went on to carry that comparison as Wanda killed every member of Earth-838’s Illuminati with as much brutality as a PG-13 rating could offer. Let’s break down the two fights and the differences between the two heroes-turned-villains.

The murder of the Guardians of the Globe was used at the end of Invincible‘s premiere to set the show’s tone and display the immense power Omni-Man holds. The Guardians of the Globe was made up of seven super-powered individuals who started the episode showcasing their powers and teamwork by stopping an attack on the White House. But when an attack by one of their closest allies took the team by surprise, they were easily dispatched in one of the most violent fights ever animated.

From killing War Women’s friends with her own mace to splitting The Immortal in half, Omni-Man made heroes that could have been mainstay characters in the show into cameo appearances. This feat is quite similar to what Raimi pulled off with his introduction of the Illuminati in his MCU debut. But whereas the Invincible fight showed fans how powerful Omni-Man was, the Multiverse of Madness massacre was used to show how far Wanda has fallen.

The Illuminati of Earth-838 was comprised of some of the strongest Marvel characters the MCU has yet to see. The super-powered committee featured X-Men founder Charles Xavier, Maria Rambeau’s Captain Marvel, the Inhumans’ Black Bolt, the great Captain Carter, John Krasinski as Reed Richards and Doctor Strange’s nemesis, Mordo. The appearance of this revered tribunal was teased in the trailers for Multiverse of Madness and made many fans theorize the implications of what it could mean for the MCU’s future. But as the scene continued, it was clear that Raimi had different intentions.

In comparison to the massacre of the Guardians of the Globe, there are several striking similarities. The most obvious is that both teams are set up to be the most powerful and smartest individuals on their respective planets. One of the clearest is the first death to come in both fights. Both Red Rush and Black Bolt are set up to be some of the most powerful members of their respective groups. Red Rush could travel around the globe in split seconds, and Black Bolt was the one who killed Earth-838’s Doctor Strange. However, both die first, with their heads being crushed in a strikingly violent fashion.

Frankly, this may be some of the highest budget trolling to have ever taken place. From the fan casting of John Krasinski coming true to teasing the appearance of Charles Xavier, fans expected this event in Multiverse of Madness to change the MCU forever. But at the end of the day, the only thing that may go on to influence the future of the series is that this variant of Mordo survived. That said, Patrick Stewart has spoken about his future involvement, and Krasinski surely did not join the MCU for what must have been several days of filming.
