Insecure’s key creators remember their favorite moments from the show

There are only a few people who have participated Uncertain since the beginning. Showrunner, director and occasional actor Prentice Penny and director Melina Matsoukas can count themselves to the rare flock, as two artists who have shaped and shepherded Issa Raes historic HBO show into the mainstream.

Now that the show is over, with the series finale airing Sunday night, both Penny and Matsoukas look back, highlighting their favorite moments and sharing them behind the scenes they’ve learned along the way.

The pilot was directed by Matsoukas, best known at the time as a music video director who had stylized works for Beyoncé and Rihanna. Both she and Penny chose the mirror moment from this episode as a favorite. In the scene, Issa gets ready for an evening in the city and stands in front of the mirror, trying on a series of lipsticks, each of which inspires a complete personality change.
