“It’s not your money,” California Highway Patrol Sgt. Curtis Martin said at a news conference Friday that several hours after stacks of cash fell on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad.

The back door of an armored truck opened on the highway around 6 p.m. 9:15, and the CHP immediately began getting calls about motorists running into lanes to get the bills, mostly 1- and 20s.

The driver of the truck started trying to pick up the money, but eventually turned to take pictures of people and cars in the chaotic scene.

The CHP did not specify how much money was lost or how much was returned. The truck from Sectran Security was on its way to an office of Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., the agency said.

A man and a woman were arrested on the spot, suspected of having taken cash. They had accidentally locked the key in their car when they came out to chase the bills and ended up stranded on the road and their vehicle blocked the traffic.

The CHP’s Martin said many photos and videos were taken on the spot and he urged anyone who had picked up cash to “do the right thing” and hand it in within 48 hours to avoid potential criminal charges. The agency is coordinating with the FBI in the case.
