While Eternal is one of Marvel’s most cosmically oriented features to date, director Choé Zhao made the film with a clear focus on emphasizing the Earth’s natural beauty that first made the Eternals fall in love with the planet. To find a balance between of the brand big screen glasses and moments that feel “human” were one of the bigger challenges Zhao and the rest of Eternal‘creative team faces, and in a new featurette, VFX supervisor Stephane Cetti opens up around how they did it.

In the new video, Ceretti breaks down some of Eternal‘flashy scenes – as Sersi, Sprite and Ikaris all collide with Deviant Kro one evening in Camden – and explain how much digital artistic work went into making the characters’ powers and presence feel real. Credibility in this scene, Ceretti described, was the biggest obstacle because of how technically complicated Sprite’s illusory powers and Sersi’s ability to transmute inorganic matter are from a VFX perspective. “So the premise was really mostly about trying to find the right dynamic – the right animation for the bus, and that Ikaris and Kro hit it,” Ceretti recalled. “So it was pretty important for us to know, you know, all the distance and speed of the bus, and where everyone was supposed to be at the time to make sure everything was in place.”

Exciting when Eternals’ hand-to-hand battle with Kro was to strike, that was the way Sersi ends up rescuing a bus driver from death by transforming his bus into one mass of rose petals it ended up pleasing Cetti the most. Although a real bus was used to create the image, Cetti and his team were able to work with a digital model after the real item was scanned, giving them the flexibility to throw it around before turning it into something completely new. “We tend to do a lot of destruction in our film, and this was not a moment like that,” Cetti said. “It was a moment of danger that turns into a moment of beauty, and it’s a little magical and whimsical. That makes the film a bit unique in that sense. “

Eternal is now in the cinema.
