Prince Charles’ former country house is for sale for $ 6.75 million
The country house from the 19th century, which was once owned by Prince Charles has hit the market again and goes for $ 6.7 million, but the new buyer should be okay with the possibility of an occasional drop-by from the upcoming king.
Brimpstead Estate is a mansion once owned by the Royal located in Dartmoor National Park in Devon, England. The Prince of Wales sold the property to a British couple in 1993 for an undisclosed amount, but with one condition. According to The times, Charles requested that he still be allowed to fish on the grounds whenever he wanted, as long as the owners were given 24 hours notice of his arrival. Although the king has not visited since they sold the estate, there is still the possibility that we may be in the mood to fish the river Dart that runs through the property. The home has also had other notable residents, such as the author Sherlock Holmes books, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who once resided there.
Brimpstead was built between 1893 and 1906 and consists of a main house with six bedrooms as well as two cottages all located on nine acres inside the national park. The main house is made of pink granite in Edwardian style with a roof and towers covered by 26,000 red clay tiles, and inside there is also a ballroom, study and library. “It’s a house of arts and crafts style. They wanted to work on it, and given that it’s in Dartmoor National Park, they wanted to do work on the property that was sympathetic to the house and its surroundings, which they has done excellently, ”says the listing agent. Hamish Humfrey of Knight Frank told Architectural Digest. “For some people, there are some kudos attached to owning a house once owned by the Crown. A lot of people, when they buy property like this, they see themselves as managers.”
The surrounding land is owned by the Duchy of Cornwall, a property created 700 years ago by Edward III to raise funds for the heir to the throne and their children. The duchy covers more than 130,000 acres of land across 23 counties in England and Wales, as well as property in London. When Prince Charles becomes king, his eldest son Prince William will inherit the Duchy of Cornwall as the new heir to the throne.
