People in Yorkshire city forced to stay indoors due to ‘vomit smell’

Something smelly is happening in a town in Yorkshire.
People living in Cottingham, East Riding, say their town smells so bad it keeps them indoors.
The stench has been described as smelling ‘like vomit’ and is so strong that it makes people ‘physically ill’.
Some claim it has forced them to cancel daily walks, and a business in the city says people have canceled pickup of Christmas orders because of the stench.
The source of the odor is thought to be a bio-waste dump in nearby Willerby, run by a company called Wastewise.
The site is located on a hill overlooking the village and composts Hull’s brown container of garden waste, including recycled waste.
In a community group on Facebook, Lucy Jane from West Cottingham asked if anyone else struggled with the smell.
‘West Cottingham smells so ugly lately that the massive rubbish dump is blowing over. I struggle with it, it stinks! Others ?, she asked.
Andy Kay added, “We’ve stopped going out because of it – we should not have to put up with it.”
‘It’s the bad mate, it makes the girls feel sick !! I have registered a complaint today with the ERYC, ‘said Katie Moxon.
John Mark from Mill House Distillery said: ‘Had a customer called me yesterday to say he would not call for his order as his wife had been ill in the car due to the’ vomit smell ‘. Can’t go on like this! ‘
A spokesman for the East Riding of Yorkshire Council said: ‘The council is continuing to investigate reports of bad smells in the Cottingham and Willerby area.
‘Residents with concerns should continue to contact the municipality’s environmental control team or directly to the Danish Environmental Protection Agency.’
This is not the first time people have complained about an ugly odor floating over their homes from the bio-waste site in Willerby.
Following similar complaints in 2020, Wastewise said it had invested millions in advanced technology to ensure it was a responsible neighbor.
It told HullLive: ‘We are heavily regulated by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (EA) and the local authorities to ensure that we comply with our environmental approval and management systems at all times.
‘Extensive odor monitoring of the surrounding area over the past few months has shown, beyond any doubt, that Wastewise operates within its permit and keeps any odors at an acceptable level.’
Wastewise has been asked to comment on recent complaints.
