Packers’ Jumbo-sized Dillon ready for several big leaps

AJ Dillon jumped so high on his first successful Lambeau Leap that his knee landed on top of the wall and he was wearing a helmet first in the stands.

The Green Bay Packers’ jumbo-sized runback has just begun his big leap.

With Aaron Jones on the sidelines of a knee injury, Dillon will see more action for the NFC North-leading Packers (8-2), starting this Sunday against Minnesota (4-5). Dillon scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter of a 17-0 win over Seattle last Sunday and has a total of 218 yards in the last two games.

“Of course, I look forward to any time I’m out there wherever I need it,” Dillon said on the AP Pro Football Podcast. “That’s the kind of philosophy I’ve had so far in the league, even last year where I did not play much. So if I need to carry the ball 40 times or four times, whatever it takes for us to win , I’m definitely more than capable. ”

A pick in the second round from Boston College in 2020, 247-pound Dillon carried the ball just 46 times in 242 yards and two goals as a rookie who played behind Jones and Jamaal Williams. Going from being the man in college to a backup in the NFL was an adjustment.

“It was definitely a big change that would not lie,” Dillon said. “But I always say that everything happens for a reason, and the silver I want to take away from it is that I had two really good friends and leaders in front of me with Aaron Jones and Jamaal. They brought me under their wings. “and really treated me like one of their own. I picked up a lot of stuff from them to improve my game. It also taught me how to make the most of every opportunity I get.”

Dillon made it against the Seahawks, barreled in from the 3rd to his first goal and went straight to the stands to celebrate with the fans. He needed the help of teammate Allen Lazard on his jump last year.

“It was amazing, my favorite Lambeau experience,” he said. “This is the first time I did it successfully alone without having to push up. And I honestly think I really exceeded that. If there were no fans, I would have dived straight into the stands, but it was great. “

Dillon scored again on a 2-yard run and made another jump. He finished with 66 yards rushing and also caught two passes from Aaron Rodgers on 62 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown. Dillon has worked hard to run routes and catch passes after his receiving ability was questioned when he came out of college.

“I’m very proud of it,” he said. “We’re still working on it all the time. It was not a lack of skills, it was just a lack of opportunities just because we did not (at Boston College). I’m really happy with my progress.”

Packers coach Matt LaFleur said Dillon is much more “detailed” in his second season in the NFL.

“But I think that applies to a lot of players who are young guys,” LaFleur added. “I’m just really happy to see his development. I think he’s as multidimensional as a halfback. I think he’s done a much better job of learning to run in his league, in terms of running behind his pads, lower his pad level, really deliver the boom. ”

Dillon has become a fan favorite in Green Bay, and this week he received a key to Door County because he promotes the area heavily on social media. Dillon started visiting the county because his fiancé’s family has a place there.

“It was really fun. We just kept going,” he said. “Then I found out I was pulling her up. She says, ‘I always go there.’ I say, ‘We have to go up again.’ “

Last week, Dillon collaborated with the Outkast NFT Collection, which consists of 10,000 programmatically generated anime and Star Wars-inspired NFT artworks. Dillon said he has closely monitored NFTs and selected Outkast after doing his research.

“It’s a space that I’m really looking to learn more about and really get into,” Dillon said. “I like what they’re up to and I can really see it picking up speed.”

Like his Lambeau Leaps.
