He sent this message to the conductor Semyon Bychkov:
‘My own empty days since I stopped performing seem to be filled surprisingly easily, there is always something to read or hear. I’m indulging in my passion for Beethoven quartets at the moment, some of the late ones sometimes seem to me to be as complicated as Mahler 7. The more I look at these things, the more I realize that I know nothing.
