University of Washington in Seattle named the 7th best university in the world in new location
Husky students and alumni have an extra reason to rejoice this week, as the University of Washington in Seattle was just ranked 7th in US News and World Report’s Best global university rankings for 2022.
UW was 8th in last year’s rankings, with the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) narrowly beating it. Now the Huskies have come ahead of Caltech, which also fell in its ranking from last year. In terms of public institutions in the United States, UW held on to its place as number two.
Excellence in topics related to the COVID-19 pandemic propelled the university to this year’s rankings. Among the 1,750 institutions examined in the report, the university was ranked in 5th place for infectious diseases; 6. for clinical medicine, microbiology and geoscience; and 7. for Immunology, Molecular Biology and Genetics and Social Sciences and Public Health. It was also ranked 10th for oncology.
In a breakdown of measurements, the report found that UW ranked 25th in the world for its research reputation and 12th regionally. It was also placed in a 7th place for the number of highly cited articles that are among the 1% most cited. The university ranked several prestigious Ivy League schools, including Yale University and Princeton University, in the overall rankings.
“It is gratifying to see UW’s impact on people and communities around the world being recognized,” said UW President Ana Mari Cauce in a news release Tuesday. “I am so proud of the extraordinary talent and efforts of our faculty, students and staff who have risen to meet the challenges of these difficult and promising times.”
