Man dies after apparently jumping from elevated areas during Phish concert at San Francisco’s Chase Center
San Francisco police say a concert-goer who fell to his death from the top level of a basketball arena is believed to have “jumped from an elevated area of the arena” and caused his death.
“Immediately before the victim jumped, it did not appear he had any physical contact with any person or barrier / railing,” Officer Grace Gatpandan said in a statement Tuesday.
The American jam band Phish, which has dedicated fans across the country, performed at the Chase Center on Sunday, when guards on duty shortly before noon. 21 were alerted about a man who had apparently fallen and needed medical attention, police said. The 47-year-old man died.
Almost an hour later at At 9.45 pm, officers on duty were warned of another man who had fallen. He was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries, as did a man he fell on. Police have not provided any information on what caused the incident.
The Chase Center is home to the NBA’s Golden State Warriors.
A spokesman for the place and the Warriors told San Francisco Chronicle that the arena was safe.
“The Chase Center was built and operated in accordance with all safety standards and requirements for facilities of this kind in the state of California and the city and county of San Francisco,” said Kimberly Veale.
The man who was injured in the second fall told CBS-affiliated KPIX that he had moved from his assigned seat in an upper level to a flatter and more protected area because he “did not feel comfortable dancing there.” Evan Reeves of Oakland, whose leg was injured by the fall, received permission from an on-site doctor to watch the rest of the show while he waited for his wife to pick him up and take him to a hospital.
