Job Description

The Department of Agricultural, Leadership, and Community Education seeks a Collegiate Assistant Professor in agricultural education. This is a 9-month (academic year), promotable appointment. For details on this track, see https://faculty.vt.edu/faculty-handbook/chapter05.html.The successful candidate will join a team of teaching and learning faculty with an emphasis on agricultural education. We are seeking an individual who can contribute by providing teaching and outreach efforts focused on contemporary agricultural science education, informed by the Vibrant Virginia initiative. Specifically, this person will work with the faculty team to serve school-based agricultural education, cooperative extension, and other local stakeholders in delivering contemporary agricultural education programs that address emerging community and economic development challenges.

The successful candidate will have a record of pedagogical achievement, lead agricultural education outreach initiatives, and develop an applied research and scholarship agenda that addresses the state and regional workforce development needs in both rural and urban communities. Additional summer outreach efforts, such as directing the Virginia Governor’s School for Agriculture and conducting teacher professional development programs, are an expectation for this position and will be separately compensated outside of the 9-month (academic year) contract.

Position Responsibilities

* Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in Teaching and Learning and Agricultural Education.
* Supervise agriculture student teachers and collaborate with CTE faculty in the School of Education licensure program in agriculture.
* Develop, conduct, and disseminate results from a scholarly program in Teaching and Learning relevant to the needs of agricultural education teachers in Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic region.
* Develop and implement agricultural education outreach activities that support workforce development and community viability.
* Work with Virginia agriculture teachers to support their engagement in continuing professional education and local program development.
* Advise the Virginia Tech Alpha Tau Alpha Chapter.

Required Qualifications

An earned doctorate in agricultural education, science education in the context of agricultural education, or a closely related field; Three or more years of successful secondary teaching experience; Experience advising student organizations; Experience conducting applied research; Demonstrated ability to work with constituents and a student body from diverse backgrounds and commitment and sensitivity to issues of diversity in the campus community; Demonstrated command of concepts and theories associated with teaching and learning in agricultural education contexts; Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication; Perform as a team member in a department that includes agricultural, leadership, and community education programs that work in concert to achieve the goals of the unit.

Preferred Qualifications

Five or more years of successful secondary agricultural teaching experience; Demonstrated skill in teacher education and continued professional education; Demonstrated record of effective university teaching experience; Experience with exceptional learner populations; Experience with extension education.
