Position Summary: The Center
for English as a Second Language (CESL) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is seeking applicants for an Assistant Lecturer position.
This is a full-time, non-tenure track, faculty appointment beginning January 1, 2022. CESL provides high-quality English as a Second
Language (ESL) instruction to enable students to meet their educational, professional, and/or personal goals.

Duties and
Responsibilities:

  • Teach intensive English classes at a variety of levels, skills, and ESP topics.
  • Teach 20
    synchronous hours per week, including in-person and online classes. Online hours may vary from early morning to evening classes per demand
    from CESL’s international partner institutions.
  • Keep 3 hours per week of office hours in support of the above courses.
  • Prepare for classes as necessary, developing materials and adding them to CESL’s online learning management software.
  • Attend
    advisory, curricular, and faculty meetings.
  • Provide mentorship to teaching assistants who are assigned the same skill or the same
    level as NTT.
  • Attend and participate in student activities including orientation sessions, end-of-term ceremony, and other
    activities throughout the term (average 1.5 hours per term for 20-hour teaching assignments and 3 hours per term for 15-18 hour teaching
    assignments).
  • Assist with TOEFL, OOPT, diagnostics and another test proctoring and marking, as assigned during contractual period.

  • Maintain positive, collegial relationships with colleagues, supervisors, students, and relevant
    individuals in the university, local community, and profession.
  • Participate in professional development activities to keep up with
    best practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other
    Languages, Applied Linguistics, or related field.
  • At least one year of full-time teaching experience in a university-based
    intensive English program.
  • Two years of demonstrated experience teaching a variety of ESL/EFL courses, level, and skills.
    Experience can be cumulative (example: 4 years as a 50% TA).
  • Excellent English language proficiency as demonstrated by written
    materials and oral production.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three or more years of full-time
    teaching experience
  • Course/curriculum development skills and experience
  • Experience mentoring new teachers
  • Ability
    to teach using new media (electronic learning platforms)
  • Evidence of dedication to ongoing professional development
  • Proficiency in a second language
  • Experience living and teaching in another country
  • Experience teaching online and in
    person
