Doina Ciobanu has posted side-by-side edited and unedited videos on TikTok.
-
The posts reveal how videos on social media can be changed to make people look completely different.

Ciobanu said she hopes her posts showing people what they see on social media do not reflect reality.
It’s no secret much of what we see on social media is not true.
But even the most savvy users of social media are often unaware of it videos can be edited just as heavily, and as easy as pictures.
That is why it is a TikTok user Doina Ciobanu, which has 68,000 TikTok followers and 853,000 Instagram followers, uses side-by-side videos to show people how drastically you can change a video before putting it online.

Ciobanu, 27, is a creative director and sustainability consultant, as well as a former model. She divides her time between Milan and London.
Ciobanu, who told Insider that she has struggled with eating disorders in the past, said she wanted to reveal the ways videos can be edited after seeing the online experiences of her 15-year-old sister and her sister’s peers.
“I have gradually come to terms with the negative, comparative mindset that once plagued me,” she said. “The daily deluge of perfected but manipulated content tends not to affect me that much anymore.”
“I have realized that not everyone is able to judge what they see and understand it so much contents is not entirely genuine or accurate, “she added.

“I’m worried she’s at an impressionable age where it’s easy to compare herself to others and get away with a negative sense of self because she’s not developed a full range of mental strengths at her disposal, said Ciobanu about his sister.
To Ciobanus point, a internal Facebook survey reviewed by Wall Street Journal revealed that “32% of teenage girls said that when they felt bad about their bodies, Instagram made them feel worse.”
The business also reported that another internal Facebook presentation said Instagram makes “body images worse for every third teenage girl.”
Ciobanu decided that the best way she could help her sister and others is by doing TikToks which shows how easily videos can be edited to create beauty standards that are unattainable.
Ciobanu said it takes seconds to transform itself using editing apps
Ciobanu uses free video editing apps to edit her videos for her posts. She typically makes her waist smaller and her legs look longer in her TikToks, some of which have gotten millions of views.
As she has done posts, she has been amazed at how easily she can totally change her appearance.
“I’ve always thought of photo editing as easy and video manipulation hard, but that’s not the case,” she said.
“These apps have become so good at changing a body or a face that what you see in my videos takes about three seconds to achieve,” she continued.
“It’s disturbingly easy to create an ‘alternative you,'” Ciobanu said.
The differences between some of the before and after videos her posts are subtle, only emphasizing how easily people can post modified clips without others noticing.
Ciobanu said her goal is not to criticize social media users, but simply to make them more aware of what they see when they go online.
“The content is about education,” she said. “Many people have come to understand that flawless skin in an image can be a sign of makeup or Photoshop, but we also need to understand that not all elements of digital content are true to life.”
“Do not get sucked in and feel bad because you think you are not personally up against what you see online,” advised Ciobanu. “It probably looks a lot different in reality.”
